Mike Leloff Sports His Antlers at the Portland Sportsmen Show

The 2012 Pacific Northwest Sportsmen show was a success.  Barry, Shirley, John and myself, had a great time.  As always, it is great to see familiar faces, and meet new friends.  We feel we had a much better show than last year.  Signs, hopefully that the economy is improving.

Mike Leloff won the Show’s Big Bull Contest, in the Typical Rocky Mountain Bull category.  His bull scored 341 3/8 B.C.

Mike hunted with Del Sol in 2011, in the Snake River Unit.  They had a great hunt, killing 4 bulls.  Mike was nice enough to let us show off his antlers at our booth.

Why Hire A Packer?

Why Hire A Packer?

If you’re like me and my buddies you probably start planning your next years hunt as soon as you tie your tag on a set of antlers. So this year to help out my fellow hardcore hunters in that planning, I thought I would go over some questions I often get from guys in regards to hiring a packer.

Why would you pay for a drop camp as opposed to just hiking in on your own?

I think the question then would be how deep in to the wilderness do you want to go? Harvest is one thing, but packing an elk out is quite another. I want to stack the odds in my favor as much as possible, and in a wilderness setting that means staying mobile. A guy needs to be able to hunt where the elk are, not just where he can pack them out. Every hunter has the responsibility of insuring the animals they harvest make it out of the woods and in to the freezer, if you can’t do that you shouldn’t even be hunting there. Think about it wherever you shoot your bull, you will have to make three to five more trips with much heavier loads to get that animal out. If it’s hot you’ll have to accomplish this in a couple of days.

Why not just use your own horses?

Horses in my opinion are a huge waste of time if you trying to hunt. With only having a week to get the job done, I don’t want to spend my time doing things that don’t involve putting down a bull. If a guy has to always get back to his stock everyday to feed and water them, he’ll be getting in a whole lot of extra leg work, not to mention a lot less sleep if the intent is to hunt from daylight to dark.

How about just splitting the load between you and your buddy’s?

That would be cool for the guy that kills the bull; not nearly as cool for his buddies that have to waste the rest of their hunt packing it out. Let’s just suppose by chance you get it hauled out with few days left to hunt. Experience tells me your buddies probably won’t have the time or energy to do it again.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to be involved in the harvest of many wilderness bulls by either myself, or friends. Without a doubt, a Drop Camp is the most effective way to hunt the wilderness. If hunting success is what you’re after, do yourself a favor and leave the packing to the packers so you can spend your time hunting. Del Sol has absolutely top notch packers. They have always exceeded my expectations, going the extra mile (or miles) to get the job done right allowing me to focus on the hunt.

2nd Season Snake River Bull Hunt Delivers Success !

The Leloff’s are back !  Well, maybe not the original two, Tom and Dave.  But brother Mike and his crew drew tags in 2011.  Needless to say, they had a great hunt.

There is nothing like hunting bulls in the Snake in November.

Tom and Dave Leloff are booked up again for 2013 !

Phil and Heidi Miller – Snake River Elk

With a valid tag in hand, Phil and Heidi decided to hire Del Sol to outfit and guide Heidi’s 2nd season Snake River bull hunt.

Never hunting elk before, and only having 4 days to hunt, Phil and Heidi made their minds up early that passing on bulls wasn’t in the cards.  They wanted a great experience, despite antler size.  Phil did mention to me on the phone that he wanted his wife to get a crack at a branch bull.

Barry horsebacked and hunted both Phil and Heidi around for 4 days, looking over a ton of awesome Snake River country.  And on the last day of their scheduled 4 day hunt Heidi finally made good on this fine branch bull.

Congratulations !!!  Thanks for trusting us to get you on a bull.  Hope to see you guys out our way again.

A Bowhunt To Remember with Icon Dwight Schuh

It was a great experience and honor to hunt and camp with Bowhunting icon Dwight Schuh.  Jeremy Johnson, myself and Dwight shared a camp in the Eagle Caps, this past hunting season.  John Wynans was our packer, and we had the time of our lives.

Jeremy got on the board early with this great bull on the 2nd day of the hunt.  I got on the board on my 3rd day of the hunt, connecting with this great tasting mule deer.  And to top off the hunt,  I was able to get an arrow into this bull during the last hour of the last day of the hunt.

What an experience…

Ryan Long Strikes Again

This bull is Ryan’s 2nd Pope and Young trophy in 3 seasons packing in with Barry Cox and Del Sol.  Ryan and his dad Larry, pack in to the same area year after year, learning the country more and more on each trip.

The two hunt off of their back, bivy style, gypsying around from area to area, in search of deer and elk.  I would say that the system they are using is working for them.

Congratulations guys !  Great bull, and great photos.

Thanks for letting us earn your repeat business.  We really appreciate it !

Snake River Bowhunt – Where It All Began

In 2006, before I ever started working with Del Sol, I booked a trip with Barry to bowhunt the Snake River.  Never hunted there before, I decided to pay for a scouting trip in August to learn the country.  My buddies Kirk Edgerton and Kevin Akers went along on the trip, and there we met our packer for the first time, a very young Jordan Manley.  I believe Jordan was 19 at the time, but from the start, we knew we were in really good hands.  If Barry trusted him, then I shouldn’t question him.

During that three day scouting trip, we learned some country, found a pile of elk, saw some bears, and even killed a bear.  Kirk arrowed a bear as Jordan predator called him in.

A few weeks later, Kevin Akers and I went back in for our September elk hunt.  This time Barry and his son Marshall packed us in.  We had an awesome hunt.  I killed a bull on the evening of the first day in there.  In fact, it was a bull that I know I saw back in August, because of his distinct 4th and 5th points.

3 days later, Kevin killed his 5 point bull.  For a couple of guys, who had never hunted the country, we felt pretty good tagging out on elk.

That next summer, I moved to Wallowa County and started working for Barry.  A decision that I have never regretted.
